Maximal Oxygen Uptake (VO2 Max) is widely regarded as the gold standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness and aerobic performance. What is the underlying physiology, and how can it be enhanced?
During maximal exercise, our bodies require immense energy. VO2 Max represents the maximum volume of oxygen your body can inhale, transport, and utilize per minute. It is typically expressed relative to body weight in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min).

How is VO2 Max Measured?
The most reliable method is direct cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in a clinical laboratory environment. The athlete performs a graded exercise protocol on a treadmill or cycle ergometer while breathing into a metabolic analyzer mask.
